A whisper of carbon and clay There is a quiet, minimalist beauty in pairing a raw, white textured clay with dark carbon markings. Inspired by the soft, papery petals of wild poppies, this small Raku vase is hand-shaped before taking a trip into the live flames.

As I sprinkle sugar across the white-hot surface, it sizzles and caramelises into tiny, dark freckles against the pale, gritty clay, while strands of real horsehair sear into delicate, feather-like trails. The result is a piece that feels both earthy and impossibly delicate.

A tactile anchor for quiet corners Because our brains love sensory contrast, the tactile shift between the raw, white textured clay body and the smooth, carbonised lines makes this tiny vase endlessly intriguing to look at and hold. Place it on a stack of books or pair it with a single dried poppy head to bring a calm, artistic atmosphere into your home.

The Details:

  • Material: White textured stoneware clay base.

  • Crafting Technique: Traditional smoke-fired Raku with real horsehair and sugar application.

  • Size: Small, tactile accent size — approx. 9cm cm high.

  • Made by: Hand-shaped and fire-finished by Nina in Shropshire.

  • Display Note: Designed for dried flowers, seed pods, or display (traditional unglazed Raku clay remains naturally porous).

  • Shipping: Sent via Royal Mail Tracked in eco-friendly, recyclable packaging.

One-of-a-kind beauty: Because the sugar and horsehair burn directly into the glowing glaze during the live fire pull, the black carbon trails and caramelised speckles on the white textured clay are entirely unrepeatable. Your vase is a single, unique moment captured in time.

A gentle note on our small-batch process: Because I work in very small, intentional batches, there may be times when an item is out of stock; if so, I will happily hand-craft your piece to order, a slow-made process that typically takes between 6 to 8 weeks from the wheel to the kiln.

FAQs

Yes, unless otherwise stated the item is dishwasher safe, however to preserve the finish and help improve the longevity of your pottery, I recommend washing it by hand wherever possible.

Overtime dishwashers can cause additional wear on ceramics, especially with intricate glazes or decorations.

In particular circumstances where a lower fire clay is used, this is clear in the description of the item and while still may 'survive' a dishwasher it will effect the glaze/colours quicker.

want you to love your ceramics as much as I loved making them. However, I understand that sometimes things don't go as planned.

In the Unlikely Event of Breakages; While I pride myself on my robust, plastic-free packaging, the journey of a ceramic piece can occasionally be a bumpy one. If your item arrives damaged:

  1. Please take a photo of the broken item and the packaging it arrived in immediately.

  2. Email me at nina@ceramicsbynina.com within 48 hours of delivery with your order number and the photos attached.

  3. Replacement or Refund: We will either send out a replacement (subject to availability in our current small-batch stock) or issue a full refund including your original shipping costs.

Please note: As every piece is unique and hand-thrown, replacement items may have slight variations in shape or hand-painted detail compared to the original.

If your order is for a specific date please contact me ahead of ordering and we can arrange a timed and trackable delivery. This will be at an additional cost.
