A tactile slice of fire and atmosphere Our eyes and hands are naturally drawn to smooth, round forms because our brains perceive them as inherently calming and complete. This decorative Raku sphere undergoes a dramatic transformation in live fire. I pull each piece red-hot directly from the kiln at nearly 1,000°C. In those few seconds, I lay fine strands of horsehair, sprinkles of sugar, and delicate wisps of feathers onto the white-hot surface.

Capturing the whisper of a feather The heat instantly scorches the materials into the clay body. The horsehair burns into crisp, dark carbon trails, the sugar caramelises into smoky freckles, and the delicate feathers leave soft, grey, ethereal silhouettes—like a gentle whisper frozen in time. Striking, delicate, and deeply tactile, this sphere is designed to sit gracefully on a coffee table stack, nestled on an open shelf, or held in the palm of your hand during a quiet moment.

The Details:

  • Form: Hand-shaped decorative Raku ceramic sphere.

  • Material: Brilliant white stoneware clay base.

  • Crafting Technique: Live-pulled Raku firing featuring burned horsehair, organic sugar, and delicate feather carbonisation.

  • Size: Approx. 10cm diameter.

  • Made by: Hand-formed and fire-finished by Nina in Shropshire.

  • Shipping: Sent via Royal Mail Tracked in eco-friendly, 100% recyclable packaging.

One-of-a-kind beauty: Because the sugar, horsehair, and delicate feathers burn directly into the glowing clay during the live fire pull, every single carbon trail and feather silhouette is completely unrepeatable. Yours is a true, one-off moment in time captured in clay.

A gentle note on our small-batch process: Because I work in very small, intentional batches, there may be times when an item is out of stock; if so, I will happily hand-craft your piece to order, a slow-made process that typically takes between 6 to 8 weeks from the wheel to the kiln.

FAQs

Yes, unless otherwise stated the item is dishwasher safe, however to preserve the finish and help improve the longevity of your pottery, I recommend washing it by hand wherever possible.

Overtime dishwashers can cause additional wear on ceramics, especially with intricate glazes or decorations.

In particular circumstances where a lower fire clay is used, this is clear in the description of the item and while still may 'survive' a dishwasher it will effect the glaze/colours quicker.

want you to love your ceramics as much as I loved making them. However, I understand that sometimes things don't go as planned.

In the Unlikely Event of Breakages; While I pride myself on my robust, plastic-free packaging, the journey of a ceramic piece can occasionally be a bumpy one. If your item arrives damaged:

  1. Please take a photo of the broken item and the packaging it arrived in immediately.

  2. Email me at nina@ceramicsbynina.com within 48 hours of delivery with your order number and the photos attached.

  3. Replacement or Refund: We will either send out a replacement (subject to availability in our current small-batch stock) or issue a full refund including your original shipping costs.

Please note: As every piece is unique and hand-thrown, replacement items may have slight variations in shape or hand-painted detail compared to the original.

If your order is for a specific date please contact me ahead of ordering and we can arrange a timed and trackable delivery. This will be at an additional cost.
