A tactile slice of fire and atmosphere Our eyes and hands are naturally drawn to smooth, round forms because our brains perceive them as inherently calming and complete. This decorative Raku sphere undergoes a dramatic transformation in live fire. I pull each piece red-hot directly from the kiln at nearly 1,000°C. In those few seconds, I lay fine strands of horsehair, sprinkles of sugar, and delicate wisps of feathers onto the white-hot surface.

Capturing the whisper of a feather The heat instantly scorches the materials into the clay body. The horsehair burns into crisp, dark carbon trails, the sugar caramelises into smoky freckles, and the delicate feathers leave soft, grey, ethereal silhouettes—like a gentle whisper frozen in time.
